According to the Cleveland Clinic, incontinentia pigmenti is an inherited disorder of skin pigmentation that also affects the central nervous system, skin, eyes, teeth and skeletal system.
Symptoms include hair loss, small or missing teeth, and eye abnormalities that can lead to vision loss.
The reality TV personality explained that due to the effects of the condition on her skin, she also doesn’t have any hair on her body, instead having scars.
“My lashes are fake,” she said. “I don’t have eyebrows and I also have scars all over my skin.”
Despite it all, she said the genetic disorder inspired her passion for fashion and to continue her successful career — which eventually led her to become president of J.Crew from 2010 to 2017.
“I was really conscious,” explained the entrepreneur. “It’s one of the reasons I got interested in fashion.”
She added, “I wanted to look better. I was constantly trying to find ways to blend in.”
