Zack Snyder talks 'Rebel Moon' (his 'Star Wars')
“Rebel Moon Part 1: The Fire Girl” premieres this Friday (22) as the first film in the new (possibly) great film series from director Zack Snyder a guy who has so many passionate fans because of his version of “Justice”. League” (2021) and opponents.
But it could have turned out completely differently. Some time ago, in a galaxy not far away, the space scifi released on Netflix could have been part of another similar franchise.
“I've had the idea for a film in the style of 'The Damned Twelve', 'The Seven Oceans', set in space for a long time. I thought that would be cool. “I've always been a fan of Star Wars, and I was just thinking about maybe living out a childhood fantasy,” Snyder says in an interview with g1.
Watch the video above where he shares the story behind the production.
“The Fire Girl” tells the story of a mysterious young woman (Sofia Boutella) on a farming planet who travels across the galaxy in search of allies to prevent the annihilation of her people at the hands of a large and powerful (and evil) empire.
In addition to Boutella (“Kingsman: The Secret Service”), the star cast also includes Charlie Hunnam (“Sons of Anarchy”), Ed Skrein and Michiel Huisman (who played the same role in “Game of Thrones”, Daario Naharis). , Djimon Hounsou (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Ray Fisher (“Justice League”).
The beginning is strongly reminiscent of the space saga created by George Lucas in the 1970s, but then takes a turn in the style of the classics mentioned by Snyder.
The 57yearold American turned to “Star Wars” producer Kathleen Kennedy when he was completing “Man of Steel” (2013) beginning what is popularly known as the “Snyderverse” of DC comic book films.
“Even if they let me, I wouldn’t be able to do it for a while. But we talked. “Star Wars” to Disney. “How come that affects this thing?” says the director.

It had an impact on it not happening. The idea was held on for years until the partnership between the filmmaker and the video platform began, which began with “Army of the Dead: Invasion in Las Vegas” (2021) and also produced a derivative, “Army of Thieves: Invasion of Las Vegas”. . “Europe” (2021).
“When I got home, Debby (Snyder, the director's wife and producer of his films) said, 'You know what? You'd better not do it with them. Because you're having problems with DC right now. You feel trapped in a box with them. Just imagine what the crazy Star Wars box would look like. The canon is crazy.”
The new “Rebel Moon” was born as a series. But Snyder preferred the security of the language he knows best.
“I said, ‘You know what? I'll just make a film. I know how to do that.' I ended up writing a super long script. So I had a 200 page script. I said, 'Okay.' “Studios won’t do a 200page script. That's crazy.”
The idea then came to divide the story into two parts. All Snyder had to do was adjust the ending of the first half of his script. But he reiterates that the ending of “The Fire Girl” is one of those that only serves to bring closure to the sequel.
If you want to know how it turns out, you don't have to wait that long. “Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scar Marker” premieres on April 19, 2024.
