The features that make it unique

Part of Patek’s Grand Complications series, the rare watch features 12 elements that make it unique. Such as cathedral minute repeater, tourbillon, perpetual calendar, retrograde date, moon phase, leap year indicator, sidereal time, celestial map and moon phases and lunar orbit. The watch face features a handcrafted blue cloisonné and champlevé enamel dial and is housed in an 18k white gold case that took craftsmen over 100 hours to create. The watch was originally sold to a buyer at the Patek Philippe Salon in Geneva in 2015.

The market

“This is a super rare and complicated watch, but this sale shows that there is a real demand for high-quality, expensive investment watches,” said Paul Altieri, founder and CEO of pre-owned watch retailer Bob’s Watches. The pre-owned watch market has recently declined in value from all-time highs in early 2022. The pre-owned watch market is expected to continue growing, reaching a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 10% by 2026, according to BCG. “There continues to be an extremely dynamic market for watches around the world, as evidenced by the passionate global offering witnessed by this sale, and further solidifies Hong Kong’s status as the international epicenter for watch collectors,” said Alexandre Bigler, vice president of Christie’s Asia Pacific and watch chief in a statement.
