While Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth’s divorce took the world by surprise, it didn’t come as a huge shock to those closest to them. Many insiders claim that well before the announcement of their split, the two not only lived very separate lives, but their financial dealings years ago should let everyone know what they were thinking.

In a resurfaced 2021 report, an insider reportedly told US Weekly that the former lovebirds had begun taking financial action in the event of a split. More specifically, the two quietly liquidated their joint fortune.

The insider claimed, “They decided their marriage wasn’t going to last forever and that they should have a wealth-sharing plan that wouldn’t destroy what they had built together.” In the meantime, the two reportedly sold several of theirs Houses, and Toth sold his stake in their former joint production company, Hello Sunshine (where Witherspoon still serves as a producer on some high-profile projects!)

While this financial move might be seen as wise, many believe it was a sign that this divorce was a long time coming.

Many other factors reportedly played a role in the couple’s divorce, such as Toth’s sudden lifestyle changes and Witherspoon’s hectic schedule.

The producer of Daisy Jones & the Six and Toth have been married since 2011 after dating for a year and share a son named Tennessee James, 10. Witherspoon also has two children named Ava, 23, from her previous marriage to Ryan Phillippe , and Deacon , 19.

The couple broke the news of their divorce two days before their 12th wedding anniversary, posting the announcement specifically on March 24th.

The Legally Blonde star wrote: “We have some personal news to share… We made the difficult decision to divorce with great care and consideration. We have shared so many wonderful years together and we move forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for all that we have created together.”

The Whiskey in a Teacup author added, “Our number one priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter. These matters are never easy and very personal. We really appreciate everyone’s respect for our family’s privacy at this time.”
