Refugee children without access to formal education are increasing

More than half of school-age refugee children lack access to formal education, while the total number continues to rise, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported today.

According to a report from this institution, the total number of displaced children without educational opportunities exceeds 14.8 million, an increase of more than 50 percent compared to 2022.

UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi warned that refugees would continue to be left behind unless their access to education was promoted.

Without education, he said, it will be even more difficult to achieve other goals, including jobs, equality, health and poverty eradication.

The report finds dramatic differences in enrollment by educational level in countries that provided data.

While 38, 65 and 41 percent of respondents are represented in preschool, primary and secondary education, respectively, only six percent achieve a university degree.
