Regina Duarte says she was stormed and rejected by Bolsonaro

Actress and former special secretary for culture under Jair Bolsonaro, Regina Duarte, 76, says she was “defenestrated” by the former president and reveals she was rejected by the artistic class when she tried to return to the stage. In an interview with portal UOL published on Friday (March 11), the actress also stated that she does not regret her time in politics. “I wanted to have this experience, I gave everything I could give.”

Regina said the invitation to join Jair Bolsonaro’s government was “irresistible” but admitted she was not ready for the position. “It was scary, but it helped me grow. Today I can better protect the naive country girl I really want to play. I’m curious, interested. I wanted to live this experience. I lived and gave everything I could give. I was windowed, that word just came to me and I don’t regret it. On the contrary, it did me a lot of good. I wasn’t prepared. I knew that, but I relied on Humberto Braga,” he says.

In 2020, to join the Bolsonaro government, Regina ended a 50year contract with TV Globo and took over the Special Secretariat for Culture, retaining the position for only three months. Since then he has found it difficult to return to the artistic world.

“I tried to do theater last year, but the two texts I chose were not approved by the writers. They didn’t want to get involved with me for their own reasons, which I completely understand. So last year I was in a bit of limbo, and earlier this year the angel threw some leaves at me,” says the actress.

Since Regina finds it difficult to return to her job, she is committed to botanical art as a “new avenue of expression.” In October of this year, the actress opened the exhibition “Nature and Me: New Discoveries” at a gallery in São Paulo, with works made from leaves, flowers and bark from tree trunks that she finds on the streets of the city of São Paulo.
