Panama City, October 20 (Prensa Latina) Today Panama hosts the XXXVI. Meeting of the Council of the Regional Center for the Promotion of Books in Latin America and the Caribbean (Cerlalc), with a focus on literacy, libraries and authors’ rights.
The opening day was chaired by the Minister of Culture (MiCultura) of the Isthmus, Giselle González, who explained that the purpose of this meeting was “to consolidate cultural mobility through the promotion of reading and books in our countries”.
González also mentioned the National Literary Meetings, the Writers’ Training Program and the 300 reading centers under the Colmena Plan, which also include indigenous regions, as achievements of the current government.
He also highlighted the institutional contribution in the publishing sector through the House of Mariano Arosemena, the production of the International Book Fairs and the National Reading Plan, and also referred to the implementation of the National Policy for the Distribution of Books and regular training on copyright law.
The official thanked Cerlalc for supporting the initiatives of classroom creativity workshops and the technical assistance provided by the organization in the implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty, of which Panama is a signatory country.
According to the directors of Cerlalc, which includes the president of the Cuban Book Institute, Juan Rodríguez, the meeting is expected to address the different challenges and opportunities of the countries of the region.
They will also discuss public policies based on three axes: creation, exhibition and education; without forgetting gender equality, inclusion, cultural diversity and decentralization.
For his part, the director of the regional organization, Andrés Ossa, announced that one of the points of the final statement of the meeting was the ethical framework for the meaningful use of artificial intelligence in the cultural creative industries, with a focus on the legal issue.
