Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated his call Friday for Israel to do everything it can to protect Palestinian civilians during its military operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, despite Benjamin Netanyahu’s protests.
Mr. Trudeau advocates for a two-state solution to bring peace and stability to the region, and he believes Israel’s invasion threatens that option.
“The path to a secure, viable and independent Jewish state that coexists with a secure, viable and independent Palestinian state is becoming increasingly difficult given all the suffering that the Palestinians are experiencing,” the prime minister commented on Friday on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in San Francisco.
“While it is imperative that we ensure the release of the hostages and bring Hamas terrorists to justice, we must also work for peace and stability in the region, and that means protecting the lives of civilians and providing humanitarian assistance.” [à Gaza]”, he added.
These comments come three days after an outing in which Mr. Trudeau called on Israel to “show utmost restraint.”
“The deaths of women, children and babies must stop,” he said on Tuesday.
The Israeli prime minister was offended by this trip and reacted on social media against Jews since the Holocaust,” Netanyahu said.
Call for calm
Additionally, Justin Trudeau reiterated his call for calm as he was forced to leave a restaurant in Vancouver after being attacked by pro-Palestinian protesters.
“We see too much tension, too much violence, too many attacks against the Muslim community, against the Jewish community,” complained the Prime Minister.
“Canadians should not be afraid of their neighbors. “It’s the opposite of who we are as Canadians and my job as prime minister is to do everything I can to bring the people of Canada together,” he added. He was concerned about the parallel rise of Islamophobia and anti-Semitism in the country.
