It’s not a temporary smokescreen. The Panthers are actually interested in Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. A league source has confirmed the Panthers are exploring the possibility of a deal.
But he might not be the only one they’re after.
Joseph Person of TheAthletic.com reports that Mayfield was “among the . . Options” for the Panthers, and that “he’s not the only guy on the list.”
Other names are not listed. For experienced quarterbacks, options are currently limited. 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is still available for sale, with a compensation package exceeding $25 million. Additionally, the biggest names will be Nick Foles, Ryan Fitzpatrick or maybe even Jared Goff if the Lions were interested in continuing. The Panthers could also bring back Cam Newton, who will be selling tickets even after his days of winning games at a steady pace are over.
Mayfied’s $18.8 million fully guaranteed salary continues to loom over the situation. How much are the Browns paying? How much does the next team pay?
These are two important questions that must be answered before a trade can take place.
