Report from Khartoum: Fighting between two Sudanese military factions kills civilians, imprisons people

Fighting between the Sudanese army and a rival paramilitary force has been going on in the city of Khartoum, Sudan since Saturday, April 15. To date, the clashes have killed at least 97 civilians and injured hundreds. The Sudanese army is fighting a powerful paramilitary group in a conflict that has fueled fears of civil war in the country. Furthermore, this situation is shattering hopes for the formation of a democratically elected civilian government, a key demand in the mass demonstrations in Sudan in 2019. “For now, a ceasefire should be the priority,” says Sudanese activist Marine Alneel.
