The stove in Shohei Ohtani’s kitchen is incredibly hot.
With the Japanese MLB superstar reportedly expected to make his free agency decision next week, Giants fans are certainly wondering what their team’s chances are of signing him.
Along with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels, the Giants are believed to be among the teams still in the running for two-time AL MVP, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported Sunday.
After making a move on a superstar signing last winter, the Giants made it clear they wanted to pursue Ohtani this offseason, but where they stand in the negotiations remains a bit unclear. But as the finalists reported, they have to be prepared to spend a lot of money, Heyman said.
Heyman wrote that the two-way phenom “has probably already received multiple offers well over $500 million, and some are speculating he could even become baseball’s first $600 million man – or at least come close.” “
Along with Ohtani, the Giants are also reportedly pursuing top free agent starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who was officially traded from the Orix Buffaloes to the Nippon Professional Baseball League on November 20. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported this week that San Francisco is “committed to acquiring one or two things this offseason.”
“Sources tell me that the Giants are ready and are putting all their hearts and finances into getting one of Shohei Ohtani or Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the coming weeks,” Morosi said during “Hot Stove” on Tuesday.
Only time will tell if the Giants can get their word across in free agency this time around — and it appears the answer may be coming soon.
