With the fifth and seventh picks in this year’s draft, the Giants have a chance to add a couple of prospects to a roster in need of talent across the board, but there’s no guarantee they’ll pick both of those picks.
SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano says the team is ready to trade one of those picks. Such a report is not surprising, since the draft is a little over a month away, but the expected return is slightly less. Vacchiano says the team is looking for a package that includes a 2023 first round player in return.
One of the reasons for this desire is financial. The team is still short on cap space, and passing the first-round pick will reduce the number of caps that the upcoming draft class will bring to the team, and possibly allow them to keep defenseman James Bradbury into the 2022 season.
The other is that the team will be in the quarterback market if Daniel Jones’ 2023 season resembles his first three pro appearances, and two first-round picks in the 2023 off-season will help their ability to make strides on that front.
Their chances of landing such a deal will increase if teams in the quarterback market fall in love with a potential client and feel the need to jump over other clubs, and we’re sure to hear more talk about it in the coming weeks.
