As the Cardinals begin their offseason program, there will be some significant absences – highlighted by a quarterback.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Kyler Murray will not be participating in the Arizona volunteer workouts and will be training instead self-employed. Rapoport adds that this is the plan of several veterans of the team, who have been communicating the plan with the Cardinals for weeks.

Because the workouts are voluntary, Murray has no obligation to participate. But the quarterback is still seeking a second contract from Arizona. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported last week that the Cardinals had not offered Murray and his agency a contract. Pelissero added that weeks ago, Murray’s agent Eric Burkhardt told Arizona he was pulling his opening proposal from the table.

No trade request has been reported up to this point. Anyhow, the Cardinals have reportedly insisted that Murray not be traded.

Murray is set to earn $5.5 million in 2022, and multiple reports have indicated that he’s highly unlikely to play at that number for the Cardinals next season.

Murray threw for 3,787 yards with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 14 regular-season games last year. But he had a rocky playoff debut, completing 19 of 34 passes for 137 yards with two interceptions in the Cardinals’ loss to the Rams.
