Reports on secret prisons: Frontex wants to investigate

Following media reports of mistreatment of asylum seekers at the European Union’s external borders, the EU’s border protection agency, Frontex, announced investigations. “Frontex is seriously investigating any indication of alleged violations of fundamental rights,” the Warsaw-based agency told AFP news agency. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said it was “deeply concerned” by the media reports.

Frontex said the information had been forwarded to the agency’s Office of the Fundamental Rights Officer. This will “investigate the allegations”.

A report by the ARD magazines “Monitor” and “Spiegel”, as well as international media Lighthouse Reports, Sky News, “Le Monde”, “Domani”, SRF and RFE/RL Bulgaria said that there would be an invasion at the external borders of the EU borders Applicants incarcerated, often abused, asylum seekers.
