#RESTORETHESNYDERVERSE Twitter is trending again following the announcement of the Warner Bros.-Discovery merger

It was recently announced that Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia has been completed. Now #RestoreTheSnyderVerse is trending again on Twitter.

Zack Snyder’s vision for the DC Universe ended in 2021 with Zack Snyder’s Justice League. However, fans of the director were not pleased that the director resigned before completing the arc he envisioned for DC’s live-action franchise. This has resulted in the #RestoreTheSnyderVerse hashtag trending more than once on Twitter. Now the movement has resurfaced, apparently due to Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia.

On April 8, it was announced that Discovery had officially completed its $43 billion purchase of WarnerMedia, with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav stating:

“Today’s announcement is an exciting milestone, not only for Warner Bros. Discovery, but also for our shareholders, our distributors, our advertisers, our creative partners, and most importantly, consumers worldwide. […] With our combined assets and diversified business model, Warner Bros. Discovery offers the most differentiated and comprehensive portfolio of content for film, television and streaming. We are confident that we can offer consumers around the world greater choice while fostering creativity and creating value for shareholders. I can’t wait for both teams to come together to make Warner Bros. Discovery the best place for impactful storytelling.”

Shortly after the acquisition became official, #RestoreTheSnyderVerse started trending on Twitter. While purchase isn’t the focus of every tweet, it’s a predominant sentiment among a large number of shared reactions:

The collaborative nature of Discovery

As mentioned, fans have launched various campaigns for Warner Bros. over the years to continue Zack Snyder’s DC Universe. Some are from anniversaries, others from WB deeming Zack Snyder’s Justice League a success. If this new foray is indeed due to Discovery completing its acquisition of WarnerMedia, these attempts beg the question: what about the $43 billion acquisition makes the Snyder-verse sequel possible?

While it’s difficult to pinpoint a specific reason, it could be due to the cooperative nature reported by Discovery. As The Hollywood Reporter explained: “For former WarnerMedia employees, observers are predicting a culture shift from the AT&T days. [Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav] is known for having a less formal and more collaborative approach to management than top AT&T executives, which is why he calls and speaks to executives fairly regularly.”

But assuming that this will actually fuel Snyder’s fan base to champion the director’s continuation of the DC Universe, it’s not entirely realistic to expect such a result from Discovery’s approach to the business. With Warner Bros. Discovery now boasting one of the most extensive media libraries in entertainment, Zaslav’s collaborative nature will most likely extend across the company’s diverse content offerings and not just focus on DC.

The next installment in DC’s live-action film franchise, Black Adam, is slated for release on October 21, 2022. This is followed by Shazam! Fury of the Gods (December 16, 2022) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (March 17, 2023).
