Return of the Expos: No more hope for the Peel Basin

The plan for a baseball stadium at Peel Basin Field, which kept alive hopes of a return of the Montreal Expos, has officially been abandoned.

This was said on Tuesday by Jeremy Filosa, journalist at 98.5 FM, who had spoken the day before with a person who confirmed that the Quebec metropolis was still in the plans for a major baseball tournament.

There would be no more hope from the Peel Basin site in the Griffintown district as the collaboration with the real estate company Devimco would be a thing of the past.

On Monday, 98.5 FM reported that sketches for a “new park” at Olympic Park had been shown to “certain key people affected by the project.” The Olympic Stadium itself would not be an option at the moment.

Rumors that a stadium would be built on the site of the former Molson Brewery were dispelled when the FTQ Real Estate Solidarity Fund and Montoni completed the purchase of the property on August 30.

The Expos moved to Washington in 2004, but Quebecers, who have long dreamed of baseball’s return, haven’t forgotten the team. A joint custody project with the Tampa Bay Rays was also rejected by the Major Leagues in January 2022.
