The 8-year-old boy was taken to the hospital. His parents have filed a complaint and the restaurant manager is to be prosecuted.
An overwhelming story, apparently part of a silly mistake by the restaurant staff. This Sunday, April 24, in Saint-Marie (Réunion), an 8-year-old child suffered from malaise, then an alcoholic coma after consuming alcohol while eating in a restaurant with his parents.
According to France Info, the little boy had ordered a water mint, but a waiter in the restaurant got his hands dirty while preparing the drink. While he thought he found bottled water to lengthen the syrup, the perpetrator unknowingly used a plastic bottle containing an entirely different liquid, in this case strong alcohol. .
A blood alcohol level of 2 grams per liter of blood
The toddler was therefore mistakenly served a mint green with vodka (or rum), who rushed to try it through a straw. However, after a few minutes, the boy began to feel uncomfortable. Concerned, his parents contacted the Samu, who found the child was showing symptoms of an alcoholic coma, and immediately sent him to the hospital.
At the University Hospital Center (CHU) in Saint-Denis, the doctors then measured “a value of more than 2 grams of alcohol in the blood”.
Such a concentration would be enough to get many adults drunk, but in the case of this kid, as the public service media points out, it “could have quite simply cost him his life.”
Four hour coma
According to information from France Info, the unfortunate boy was in a coma for no less than four hours before the effects of the intoxication wore off. However, he was observed overnight from Sunday to Monday before being discharged from the hospital.

The parents, in turn, filed a complaint against the restaurant for “unintentional injuries,” prompting the launch of an investigation, during which police questioned several of the restaurant’s employees. However, according to France Info, these interviews led to the summons of the restaurant manager before the Saint-Denis Criminal Court.
