The game The package, which was presented on the stages of La Licorne in 2018, already combined all the ingredients of a good psychological thriller. By making the most of the suspense and mystery of the story, filmmaker Anne Émond has created a successful adaptation of this captivating and disturbing work.

Written by actress and playwright Catherine-Anne Toupin (who also wrote the play), the film, renamed Lucy Grizzli Sophie for its move to the big screen, centers on the character of Sophie (Toupin), a woman in Panic trying to escape her reality where she is clearly in danger.

After driving all night, she ends up at a remote inn on the edge of a lake, dozens of miles from home. There she is greeted by Louise (Lise Roy), the owner of the house, and her nephew Martin (Guillaume Cyr), who recently lost his job.

Over the course of their conversations, and especially during a strange, drunken evening, a strange friendship develops between Sophie and Martin.

A gripping thriller

It is difficult to say more about the events that will follow without giving away too many clues about the key to the plot of Lucy Grizzli Sophie. The film deals with topics that were current when the piece was written six years ago and are unfortunately even more relevant today. We are thinking in particular of cyber violence, which is omnipresent in our society, but also of the increase in misogyny and anti-feminist discourses on the Internet.

By brilliantly appropriating the codes of tension, director Anne Émond (Jeune Juliette, Nelly) creates a fear-inducing and oppressive atmosphere that immediately puts the viewer in a mystery. Even if some of the twists seem a little too predictable to have the desired effect, Lucy Grizzli Sophie proves to be very effective, especially thanks to the intense and lively performances of her trio of actors.

This powerful film will leave no one indifferent with its hard-hitting approach and the relevance of its subject matter.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5. Lucy Grizzli Sophie, a film by Anne Émond with Catherine-Anne Toupin, Guillaume Cyr and Lise Roy. On the screen.
