Have you ever dreamed of the perfect sports car? It’s true that there are much more pressing concerns in the world right now: the war in Ukraine, global warming and this damn pandemic, which fortunately seems to want to slow down; In short, there is no shortage of humanitarian causes. But hey, for the thrill-seeker behind the wheel, this question is perfectly legitimate.

Owning a sports car is a privilege that can be experienced in many ways, but what counts – as with any other vehicle – is the joy of flying. This is also the main purpose of this 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman T, a new livery available in the brand’s more ‘affordable’ sports range. The “T” here stands for Touring and according to Porsche, this version is synonymous with driving pleasure in its purest form.

Let me add that the Porsche 718 Cayman – as well as its soft-top cousin, the 718 Boxster – is already associated with the driving fun so coveted by die-hard driving enthusiasts, and it’s growing a bit more with each climb up the 718 lineup but driving enthusiasts don’t necessarily need a racetrack toy like the Cayman GT4 RS for their everyday life. A simple Porsche Cayman, in S or even GTS livery, can do well. So what about this T livery inspired by the 911 T introduced in 1968?

In the spirit of the 911 T
Like the other vehicles tattooed with the T crest, the 718 Cayman T pays homage to the 911 T marketed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the raison d’être of this variant, which at the time was intended to lower the entry price of the 911, without compromising on the performance of the to do without the new 6-cylinder boxer engine.

This time around, there’s no question that the Cayman T upgrades the car’s capabilities (compared to the base model), but under that body and in the middle position, there’s no “boxer six” here but a “flat-four” around the most affordable sports car to move in the Porsche program.

In fact, it’s the same turbocharged engine as the most accessible version. So we’re talking 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. of peak torque, numbers that are almost disappointing in the overpowered automotive world of 2022. In this case, the gearbox installed in front of the supercharged Flat-4 is the seven-speed PDK unit instead of the standard six-speed manual.

Note, however, the presence of 20-inch rims (instead of the 18-inch rims on the base Cayman), as well as the PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) system, which, as the name suggests, adjusts the suspension rebound each wheel depending on road conditions and the driver’s driving style. PASM also lowers the assembly height by 20 mm.

The PTV system (Porsche Torque Vectoring) from the Stuttgart brand is also part of the equipment list of the Cayman T, as is the limited-slip differential on the second axle. Finally, the “T” treatment continues inside, with headrests embroidered with the “718”, fabric handles in the doors, not to mention the power-adjustable sports seats upholstered in the center on this sports Texas.

An affordable Porsche?
While the average price of a new car has risen sharply recently, even at a base price of $75,300, a Porsche Cayman isn’t really the definition of an affordable sports car, although we’re talking given a 911 is a steal! The Cayman T, on the other hand, starts at $77,900. However, the car borrowed for this test had some options to make driving a little more comfortable.

The 718 T interior trim package adds a total of $3,160, which adds a number of stitching throughout the cabin, Porsche offering four colors including Yellow Course. The addition of the PDK box, meanwhile, adds $4,250 to the bill, keyless entry ($770) and Bose sound system ($1,130)… and that’s it!

Eventually, the bill climbs to $87,210 before taxes and fees, which isn’t bad at all.
