It is not easy to face a group of nine dancers when performing alone. Zachary Bastille was able to win at the personal meetings of revolution, Sunday night, eliminating Dreampieces.
Zachary Bastille knew he had to be strategic to get through this phase. “The best way to prove I belonged on the show was to come in with a different mindset than I did when I auditioned. So I decided to go for a more abstract universe with an aesthetic different from Dreampieces, and I had to combine that with my technical side, a strength that had been highlighted in the first round.

After choosing the song 100-meter hurdles by Louis-Jean Cormier, he knew he had found a good vein. “There were many musical accents that I was able to use in the music to define the variety of movements and textures that I brought to the choreography. I felt really inspired to create this issue.”

Zachary took it a step further by incorporating a surprise into his revolutionary moment that wasn’t necessarily seen by the masters. “For the Revolution, I’m doing a pretty classic position that shows the lines and the technique, but it’s also a nod to my first Revolution. I actually returned to the same position where I was lifting into the air.” If we look at the two pictures, the similarity is actually striking.

Above all, the dancer wanted to stand out from Dreampieces. “It was difficult to do better than with a group of nine people who can look for structures and images full of stories. I had to rely on my technical skills and at the same time create a little surprise.”

The 23-year-old is originally from Gatineau and studied dance in Toronto before moving to Montreal a year and a half ago. “I felt like I no longer had my place in Toronto. In Quebec there is greater support for the arts, both from the government and the public. There are more opportunities, whether on television, but also in mainstream or underground theater.”
