Swimming for adults
Rick and Morty has finally revealed the voice actors replacing star Justin Roiland.
Ian Cardoni is the new voice of Rick Sanchez and Harry Belden is Morty Smith. Their names appeared in the credits of Sunday night’s Season 7 premiere. The opening credits also omitted the usual “Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon” and only showed the “Rick and Morty” logo.
The characters’ new voices were first heard in the Season 7 trailer that debuted in September, but Adult Swim wouldn’t reveal the people behind them. Screening programs for “Rick and Morty” released before the start of the season ended up missing credits, and although show officials said they would reveal the names of the voice actors under an embargo before the Season 7 premiere on Oct. 15 Adult Swim then broke that promise on Friday, saying via email: “We will continue to keep the names of the new voice actors secret until the East Coast premiere on Sunday night.”
Adult Swim fired Roiland in January after he was accused of domestic violence. He co-created Rick and Morty with Dan Harmon, in addition to voicing several other characters on the series. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office later dismissed the charges in March. In September, NBC released a report alleging that Roiland had used his fame over the years to lure and meet young women, some of whom were underage. One of the women claimed that Roiland sexually abused her; Roiland has denied the allegations through his lawyer.
“Rick and Morty” follows the eponymous grandfather-grandson duo on their journey through the universe. In addition to the trailer, Adult Swim teased the new voices in the upcoming season’s logline: “Rick and Morty are back and sounding more like themselves than ever,” the synopsis reads. “It’s season seven and the possibilities are endless: What’s going on with Jerry? BAD summer?! And will they ever go back to high school?! Maybe not! But let’s find out! There’s probably less piss than last season. “Rick and Morty”, 100 years! Or at least until season ten!”
“Rick and Morty” was released in 2013 to critical acclaim. Season 7, premiering October 15 on Adult Swim, will feature 10 new episodes.
Roiland was also co-creator and lead narrator of the animated comedy series “Solar Opposites” on Hulu; Dan Stevens was announced as his replacement to voice the main character Korvo.
