In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has evaluated the risk of bleeding disorders after vaccination against Covid-19. In one study, the structure triggers a “statistical signal,” but what are the real risks?
This is a side effect that has long been known to the world’s health authorities: in April 2021, rare cases of thrombosis observed in young people who had just been vaccinated had worried health stakeholders. But does the recent FDA study really show an intrinsic link between vaccination against Covid-19 and bleeding disorders in the elderly?
In practice, the study, signed by the US Food and Drug Administration, was conducted jointly with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Titled “Covid-19 Vaccine Safety Surveillance in Individuals Aged 65 and Over,” it was published two months ago in the journal Vaccine and acknowledges a “statistical signal” in individuals over the age of 65 who have recently received a dose of Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine .

In the method, the FDA and the various health centers used the large American medical database Medicare. The two structures examined the health data of almost 30 million elderly people in the United States: “We evaluated 14 results of interest after vaccination against Covid-19,” underlines the study. Three results reached “the threshold of a statistical signal after vaccination”, particularly with regard to disseminated intravascular coagulation.

In Europe, the health authorities had already dealt with vaccine-related coagulation disorders, in particular with sera from AstraZeneca and Janssen. “The Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC) and package leaflet have been updated to include side effects such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic syndrome and coagulation disorders,” the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Healthcare Products (ANSM) announced last June.
Therefore, “Everyone who has been vaccinated should immediately seek medical advice if they develop signs and symptoms that indicate bleeding disorders,” says Janssen’s leaflet.
