Rita Ora reveals she wrote her new song the morning after her wedding while hungover

Rita Ora announced that she wrote her new song You & I the morning after her wedding to Taika Waititi while she was hungover.

The 32-year-old singer released her new album – also called ‘You & I’ – on Friday and appeared on Capital Breakfast ahead of the release, where she told Chris Stark, Roman Kemp and Sian Welby the hilarious story of how the song came to be.

After her marriage to the filmmaker, she announced she was dating a producer who couldn’t take another day, so she snuck away from her new husband and wrote the candid new track in a “morning after the night before” -Haze.

She said, “Yeah, I was very hungover… Well, the producer I wanted to work with wasn’t available until the day after my wedding.” And I was like, ahh, I can’t cancel it. And so I went in. I said listen I just got married and I’m really hung over…

“I don’t know how this will turn out. But I don’t want to miss this session. So let’s do it, and he said, “Okay, let’s just sing about you getting married.”

“I said, ok, cool, let’s write an ultimate wedding song.” And actually, that’s my favorite song on the album.”

Roman asked, “What I’m interested in is what Taika thought about it? …Did he wake up the day after the wedding to find you gone?”

Then she admitted, “Yeah, I snuck out.” I think I only slept two, three hours. And then I went in and actually mentioned all my favorite love songs in this love song. So it was all about making the ultimate love song…

“It actually worked wonders because there was no filter.” “When you’re hungover, you just say whatever you want.”

Discussing the meaning of the new album, she revealed, “The ‘you’ in You & I represents more than just the man I love.” It’s my mother, my friends, my fans and in a way it represents the relationship I have with myself…

“This album has been like my diary for the last two years and I’m so excited that you can finally hear it.”

Rita co-wrote every track on the album, which has been described as her most diary-rich project to date. She worked with executive producer Oak Felder, whose past collaborators have included Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys and Usher.

Earlier this year, Rita revealed her secret marriage to Taika when she shared details of her “spiritual” ceremony. After they tied the knot last summer, Rita revealed she didn’t want any “special attention” that day.

She told Glamor magazine, “Some women want that special attention that day.” And everyone is different. And for me – I think everything about my job is… very attention oriented – I wanted to keep it private because my life and career isn’t…

The last-minute ceremony was scheduled in just two days, and the only guests who attended in person were Taika’s two daughters from his first marriage and Rita’s sister.

The couple was under pressure to find a date despite their busy work schedules, and Rita explained, “Either then, or we’d have to wait forever…”

“I didn’t want to do it without my stepkids there.” So we just figured it out and did it. And it was perfect.’
