According to TVA Nouvelles, few drivers adhere to the speed limit at the construction site on Boulevard Sainte-Geneviève in the Chicoutimi-Nord sector in Saguenay.
We recorded the speed of 108 vehicles for 40 minutes. Only 9 of them, almost 8%, drove at 30 km/h, the limit for this project, which will last until November.
The vehicles traveled at an average speed of 55 km/h. Some vehicles even reached speeds of up to 70 km/h.
“That doesn’t surprise me. “The speed limit is not adhered to anywhere, people drive really fast here,” confirmed one citizen.
“I like everyone else too: if people drive 70 km/h, I do that too. But I try to be careful,” explained one citizen.
A former traffic police officer we spoke to was not at all surprised by these findings, as he said speeding was commonplace.
“I was a traffic flagger for 23 years, I know that people have no respect for speed limits, but also or even for road flags,” explained the former flagger.
“You have to be careful when approaching a construction site to protect workers. “People are not always visible, you have to slow down,” confirmed Saguenay police spokesman Dominic Gagnon.
Authorities have confirmed that police officers are present in the area to ensure road safety regulations are adhered to.
