Robert Garrigus is reported as the first PGA Tour player interested in playing in the LIV Golf Series

Robert Garrigus swings at the 2019 Genesis Invitational.

Robert Garrigus, 44, has won once on the PGA Tour.

Robert Garrigus is the first PGA Tour player to apply for permission to compete in one of Greg Norman’s series of big money events beginning in June.

Golfweek reported that Garrigus has applied for a conflicting event clearance required of tour members to attend overseas events.

The first event of the LIV Golf Invitational Series will be held June 9-11 at Centurion Golf Club in London.

The PGA Tour declined to comment.

Players must apply for releases 45 days prior to the event, in this case April 25th. The tour will then notify the player at least 30 days in advance, which is May 10th.

Garrigus, 44, has a career win in 2010 and has limited status on the PGA Tour. He’s playing this week’s Zurich Classic on sponsorship leave with partner Tommy Gainey.

In March, Norman announced an eight-tournament, 48-field, no-cut, $25 million event schedule that includes a team component. The single winner gets $4 million and last place pays approximately $150,000.

Norman said last week that his LIV Golf Investments had changed course after Phil Mickelson’s comments sparked significant negativity.

Instead of creating a league that would pay guarantees to those who join, those plans were shelved.

It is currently not necessary to participate in any of the eight events. Next year there will be 10, Norman said, hoping to start the league in 2024.
