According to the National News Agency (ANI), “barrels of rockets were fired from the Qleilé Plain in southern Lebanon towards the Galilee” in northern Israel.
Israel has come under fire from southern Lebanon for the third day in a row as it wages war since Saturday against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.
“In response to detected fire from Lebanese territory into Israeli territory, IDF (army) soldiers are currently responding with artillery fire,” the Israeli army said in a statement.
In a statement, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), based in southern Lebanon, said it had “detected rocket fire from south of Tire” at around 5:30 p.m. (1430 GMT).
“We remain in contact with authorities on both sides of the Blue Line (which defines the border between the two countries) to defuse this very dangerous situation,” the blue helmets added, calling for “restraint at this critical time.”
The shooting, which is currently unclaimed, comes the day after three militants from the powerful pro-Iranian Hezbollah were killed in an Israeli bombing raid in the border area.
Israel carried out a bomb attack in the area after announcing that it had killed “several armed suspects” who had entered its territory from southern Lebanon.
These infiltrations were claimed by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which says it supports the Hamas movement in the war against Israel that has already left more than 3,000 dead.
