Rodrigo Chaves, new President of Costa Rica

The economist Rodrigo Chavez The new President of Costa Rica was elected after the elections held this Sunday, April 3rd.

The Cubadebate website explained that the President in his first message promoted the union and asked for the support of the opposition.

“I’m sending a message to José María (Figueres) and to all the people who voted for him. I congratulate him on his nobility and ask Don José and his party to work together,” he said. “I ask that we all unite under the blue, white and red of our national symbol, the flag,” he added.

After mention, that Telesur website, Rodrigo Chaves is virtually unknown in Costa Rican national political life, having spent most of his career abroad.

In Costa Rica, he was best known for his brief tenure as finance minister for just six months in the Alvarado government, during which he attempted to boost the stricken economy amid the pandemic.

In the last days of his campaign, Chaves signed an agreement with some of his representatives in which he promised to eliminate so-called gender ideology in the education system.

The country held the second round of presidential elections this Sunday after no candidate received 40% of the votes needed for the post in the first round in February. (ALH)
