Around 45 million people are expected at the Vatican and Rome for the huge pilgrimage event.

Construction work in Rome for the Holy Year 2025 will continue even after the major pilgrimage event begins. The investment plan does not end this year, but will continue in 2025 and 2026, said the general director of the company responsible “Giubileo 2025”, Marco Sangiorgio, to the Italian daily “Il Messaggero” (Thursday). “However, the most necessary works will be completed by 2024. Construction sites in the following two years will then be less significant,” explained Sangiorgio. Overall, we are on schedule.

The general director praised the positive effects that the infrastructure projects would have for the city of Rome. Cooperation with the Vatican is helpful, although the Vatican does not contribute financially to the works. At the national level, the pilgrimage event will have a profitable impact on the gross national product.

In order to manage the flow of traffic and pilgrims, numerous construction projects will have to be implemented. This includes an underground car tunnel so that pedestrians can walk from Castel Sant'Angelo along Via della Conciliazione to St. Peter's Basilica without crossing a street.

According to Il Messaggero, the company “Giubileo 2025” is wholly owned by the Italian Ministry of Finance. It is intended to support the special representative for the anniversary year, the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, in his task.
