Ronnen Rubinstein on how the loss of TK affects his relationship with Carlos

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 3, Episode 8 “In the Unlikely Event of an Emergency.”]

After the sudden death of Gwyn (Lisa Edelstein) – she was hit by a bicycle – her son TC (Ronen Rubinstein) and ex-husband Owen (Rob Lowe) go to New York for her funeral. But unfortunately they never succeed 9-1-1: Lone Star.

Instead, an emergency in the air – the plane loses an engine – requires the first responders to intervene, rescuing the woman who was in their line and was briefly sucked out the window. And after doing so, TK admits to Owen that he found him in the fire department earlier, in the ambulance, because he planned to get up so much, nothing mattered. But he knew what that would do to Gwyn, who was the one who put him in rehab (as seen in heartbreaking flashbacks).

Rubinstein breaks the tense episode, which included his best work on the show so far, and irritates what lies ahead for TK, Tarlos and others.

How do you think TK would have reacted if they had reached the funeral?

Ronen Rubinstein: I think TK would have a complete breakdown. Many of the modern things in the episode, TK is really trying to make a balancing act, trying to stay strong and also trying not to lose them completely because his mother was everything to him. I think if they did the funeral, he would have lost it completely. I don’t think he will be able to stay strong anymore.

What we will see from TK – alone and with Owen and Carlos [Rafael Silva] – When it comes to sadness to move forward?

You will definitely see TK grieving with Carlos. We will definitely not ignore the fact that Gwyn is gone. We will let this storyline breathe and it will affect TK throughout the season. And it will definitely add some inequality to their relationship, for sure.

And with TK and Owen? There was that exchange with TK that he still loved her.

It’s just that TK was really emotional and I don’t think he necessarily meant that. I think a lot of emotions are just happening and he was really raw at the time. He knows his father loved her. I think he was just trying to work it all out. This can just bring Owen and TK closer together, because now Owen really is all he has left of TK when it comes to family. We will definitely see what this means for them.

TK tells Owen that he would have inflated if he hadn’t caught him. And then he says he can’t believe he’s going to do this to Gwyn. Would he have taken the drugs if Owen hadn’t found him?

Honestly, I think I would. In AA I did my research and the loss of someone can be a cause of relapse. This was the perfect example of how he literally didn’t know what else to do, and he says it on stage: He was going to get up so high that nothing else mattered. I think he would do it and he would regret it later, but I think he would do it. I think the question is how much would he take? Would it be a different situation, like maybe the pilot, maybe he would take too much? This is something I was thinking about in this scene, but yes, I think he would go through it.

TK told Owen about it and Tommy [Gina Torres] and Nancy [Brianna Baker] made an inventory after Nancy saw TK near the drugs. Are there any significant concerns in the future that TK will use?

Not necessarily. I think everyone knows that TK is a person with a very strong will and if nothing else, they will just be very supportive and give him the space and time to grieve and just go through all the emotions of losing someone like that. Especially with Tommy and Nancy, they’re just going to be really supportive and just amazing people through it all.

You said that your favorite scenes of TK and Owen, TK and Gwyn, TK and Carlos are coming up. Were they all in this episode?

Almost. I still think my favorite scene with Carlos and TK was when he revealed the attic to me. This was definitely my favorite of the season. Plane rescue with Owen is definitely my favorite. And then all the flashbacks with Gwyn are my favorite. These, to be honest, were probably some of my favorite things I’ve ever done, period, and it’s the proudest and hardest job I’ve ever done. This episode is really, really, really important to me and really special to me and I really gave my whole mind, body and soul for this episode because I knew it would take everything to really achieve this kind of work.

Speaking of these memories – it was so amazing to just see this connection and especially on the plane, Gwyn said he couldn’t go to his son’s funeral, this part was pure heart.

I know, and the notice. The fact is that he was on his way to her funeral. I think that’s why mixing these flashbacks with today’s stuff was so powerful and just heartbreaking. This is Tim Miner, who is just a damn genius. This episode is just the one that shoots all the cylinders and my director, John Gray, was my maestro. He steered me in all the right directions and was such a balancing act with this performance. I may have taken some extra crazy steps to get to where I needed to go in retrospect, but I think it was worth it at the end of the day.

Now that TK and Carlos are together again, they look healthy. After going through the separation, are they settled in their relationship in a way they were not before?

Yes. I think they are very solid. Things were going well really good for them and then it happened; I think it only brings people together. But as I said before, we will definitely let this storyline breathe and stay. And it will definitely affect TK and Carlos and we will see that in the next few episodes.

It will also bring out a plot that is somewhat surprising. TK will get support from someone else who is dealing with the loss and it will be a really nice kind of new layer for this relationship. You’ll see this in episode 9 and I’m really excited to go that route.

Is this someone else Tommy?

[Laughs] This is someone else who is dealing with loss.

Given what happened to the attic, do you think TK should be the one to offer if / when that time comes?

Everyone wants to see them get married. After everything that happened, I have no idea. The beauty of this season is that we are on our toes every episode. I get really nervous every time we get a new script, because Tim can just do something completely unusual. So I have no idea. I’ve always said that I would think that TK will be the one to offer, but I don’t know, maybe after everything we’ve been through, it might make sense to be Carlos. We will just have to see if and when this will happen.

What else is ahead for TK? Something about rescue? It’s hard to beat one on a plane that lost an engine …

Yes, on the way to your mother’s funeral. You can’t really go beyond that. But believe me, the writers will definitely try. It’s just such an amazing season and I said it was our best season. I definitely think this is the best season for TK. And yes, we will definitely see some really crazy things, especially for TK. The loss of his mother will continue. We’ll see it in the next few episodes and it won’t just disappear and things will happen and it will add another layer to this kind of complicated TK Strand journey. It was, to put it mildly, an amusement park train.
