Round 6 netted Netflix $900 million, but its creator "didn’t get rich" Omelet

The worldwide success of round 6 accounted for the market value Netflix up $900 million, according to a new report from the Los Angeles Times — but series creators Hwang DonghyukIn interviews, he made it clear how little profit the sixth round brought him personally.

“I make enough to put food on the table, but I’m not rich,” he commented. Hwang explained that in his contract, he ceded all intellectual rights to Round 6 to Netflix and waived any final payments (which creative professionals receive if their works are reproduced over time).

The deal signed by the screenwriter came after years of trying to sell his idea to various South Korean and international broadcasters, who always turned him down. Hwang has admitted in numerous interviews that Round 6 would never have happened without Netflix’s support.

However, as the Los Angeles Times reports, contract terms for creators are not uncommon in the South Korean industry, particularly for productions picked up by American streaming platforms.

“At the beginning, [com o sucesso de Round 6] I was excited when I thought my shows could be seen by people all over the world, but now I’m thinking, so what? “I’m not going to get anything from this,” commented a screenwriter from the Korean industry who refused to be named.

Round 6 is the mostwatched series in Netflix history, with over 2 billion hours watched on the platform. The second season is currently in production, but there is no set premiere date.
