“This is a great victory for Quebec,” commented the chief captain at a press conference on Friday. He also thanked US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for reaching this agreement.
The agreement must also be effective from midnight tonight.
François Legault was also very transparent on Thursday, saying he hoped for such an announcement.
“We’ve worked very hard over the past few weeks to ensure Mr. Trudeau puts this at the top of his stack on his priorities with Mr. Biden. I think it’s important for Quebecers that this issue is addressed and potentially resolved,” the Caquist premier commented minutes before entering the Blue Room on Thursday morning.
The Legault government has made numerous outings recently to argue that Quebec has exceeded its capacity to accommodate asylum seekers arriving irregularly via Roxham Road.
Notably, François Legault wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, signing an open letter in Toronto’s The Globe and Mail.
However, opposition parties have less strong opinions on the Roxham Road closure.
At Québec solidaire, we wanted the path to remain open. The other parties called for Roxham to be closed.
However, there are still some issues to be resolved and the parties are eager to hear the details.
