SEWARD, Alaska (KTUU) – The Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines ship named Radiance of the Seas announced to passengers Friday that its scheduled sailing from Seward, which was scheduled to begin Sept. 1, has been canceled due to mechanical problems with the ship became.
The Radiance of the Seas was scheduled to leave port on Friday for a seven-day cruise, calling at Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Haines before reaching its final destination in Vancouver, British Columbia. Passengers were informed on Friday that the cruise would not take place.
A letter distributed to passengers cited problems with the ship’s propulsion system as the reason for the cancellation.
“As you may be aware, upon returning to Seward, Alaska, the Radiance of the Seas experienced a technical problem in the propulsion system that affected the ship’s speed,” said a letter distributed to passengers . “Unfortunately, our teams were unable to complete the necessary repairs to enable us to depart today. For this reason we will be canceling this current trip.”
Passengers will receive a full refund for their cruise and all shore excursions booked through Royal Caribbean. Those who also booked their travel through Royal Caribbean will be rebooked, and those who have not will receive a credit of up to $600 toward rebooking pre-booked return flights.
Passengers are allowed to stay on Radiance of the Seas until Sunday, September 3rd and receive complementary services such as internet, beer and wine, and a shuttle to Seward.
Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines has not yet responded to requests for cancellation. It is unknown whether the mechanical issues will impact future trips.
