New Delhi:

The RRR juggernaut continues to roll with back-to-back awards for director SS Rajamouli and actor Ram Charan. Rajamouli won the grand prize — Best Director — at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, reports Variety. The list of directors who competed against Rajamouli included Hollywood legend Steven Spielberg, Darren Aronofsky, Sarah Polley and Gina Prince-Blythewood. Ram Charan, meanwhile, was honored for his achievements in entertainment on NDTV’s True Legend last night. Ram Charan co-starred in RRR alongside Jr. NTR. The film was released worldwide simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. The film was also released in Japan and the United States and was submitted in various categories for next year’s Oscars.

Meanwhile, after Ram Charan won on NDTV’s True Legend last night, his father and veteran actor Chiranjeevi congratulated him on Twitter, writing: “Nanna absolutely delighted with you and proud to receive the True Legend – #FutureOfYoungIndia Award #NDTV Bravo! Way to go, love, Ram Charan – Appa and Amma.”

At True Legend, Ram Charan recalled a hilarious story of how his father was there when SS Rajamouli, who directed Ram Charan’s 2009 film Magadheera, told the young actor about the film. Chiranjeevi was so involved and excited while listening to the narration that Rajamouli was forced to clarify with these words: “Sir, not you, your son.”

RRR was SS Rajamouli’s first project following the 2017 blockbuster Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which was also a smash hit. Almost two months after its theatrical release, RRR began streaming on Netflix. According to the OTT giant, RRR (Hindi) became the “world’s most popular Indian film on Netflix” in June.

Set in the 1920s, RRR is a “fictional story based on two legendary freedom fighters – Alluri Seetharamaraju and Komaram Bheem”. It boasts an impressive cast that has included Ram Charan and Jr. NTR in the lead roles. It also starred Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Olivia Morris, Samuthirakani, Alison Doody, Ray Stevenson. The film was met with largely positive reviews from film critics and of course an overwhelming response from audiences, both in India and around the world.
