From India Today Web Desk: Part of a bridge in Bihar’s Begusarai collapsed and plunged into the river on Sunday. The bridge, which was built at a cost of Rs 14 crores, was not officially inaugurated although traffic was operating on it.

No one was on the bridge at the time of the incident. The bridge being built across the Burhi Gandak river at Sahebpur Kamal in Begusarai had cracked a few days ago.

“The bridge has been temporarily closed for use. We are investigating the reason for the bridge collapse,” said Roshan Kushwaha, DM Begusarai.

The district judge said the matter was under investigation and promised to take action against those responsible. Kushwaha said a detailed investigation report will guide the following actions.

The bridge lies between Ahok-Bishanpur in the Sahebpur Kamal block on the Gandak River and was not officially inaugurated. DM Kushwaha said that the bridge was built by the Rural Works Department of Sahebpur Kamal Block and the works on it were carried out in 2016.

Although the bridge was formally non-functional, nearly two months of operations were noted.

After the incident, a probe was launched by the bridge’s technical director and expert team, and traffic and vehicle movement on the route were halted.
