‘RS. Marvel trailer: MCU’s first Muslim superhero debuts on Disney+

In 2013, Marvel Comics introduced Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey who idolizes Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel. By 2014, Kamala had superhuman powers, her own solo series, and her own superhero moniker – Ms. Marvel – making her the first Muslim superhero to lead a Marvel comic.

Nine years later, Kamala is making history again in Ms. Marvel, the latest Disney Plus series from Marvel Studios, with the first trailer debuting on Tuesday. The series will premiere on June 8th.

Newcomer Iman Vellani landed the lead role after an extensive search by Marvel Studios. She is joined by new face Saagar Sheikh as her older brother Aamir, Mohan Kapoor (Disney Plus Hotstar series Crime Next Door) and Zenobia Shroff (Big Sick) as her parents Munib and Yusuf, Matt Lintz (The Walking Dead ”) as her best friend Bruno and Aramis Knight (“Into the Badlands”) as the vigilante known as the Red Dagger.

Set to “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd, the trailer opens with Kamala in the school counselor’s office as doodles of speech bubbles, hearts and devil horns appear on screen. Kamala has been called the typical superhero nerd dreamer, but at some point she gains strange cosmic powers, such as the ability to launch energy blasts and create glowing steps to walk through the air. Later in the trailer, she dons a comic red and blue costume and performs cosmic punches with a giant glowing fist.

Bisha K. Ali (“Four Weddings and a Funeral” on Hulu) serves as executive producer and head writer, while Sharmeen Obeid-Chinoy (Oscar winner, director of the short documentaries “Saving Face”) directed the first six-episode season. and The Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness), Mira Menon (For All Mankind), and Adil El Arbi and Bilal Fallah (Bad Boys For Life).

Marvel originally announced “Ms. Marvel is slated to premiere in late 2021, but after the pandemic flooded the calendar with nine other Marvel Cinematic Universe films and series, the studio pushed back the series to summer 2022. Miracles, a feature film sequel to the February 2023 debut Captain Marvel, in which Vellani will star alongside Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambo (Teyonah Parris) (of WandaVision).
