“The Ukrainian armed forces unsuccessfully tried to attack the Black Sea Fleet ship Ivan Khours (…) in the exclusive economic zone of Turkey,” the Russian Defense Ministry said on the social network Telegram.
According to Moscow, this attack occurred when the Russian ship was “performing tasks aimed at ensuring the safe operation of the Turkish Stream and Blue Stream pipelines” that transport Russian gas to Turkey.
“All enemy ships were destroyed by regular fire from the Russian ship 140 kilometers northeast of the Bosphorus,” the Russian ministry said.
Since the invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, there have been several incidents involving Russian warships or aircraft in the Black Sea.
In March, two Russian warplanes intercepted a US drone, causing it to crash in international waters, escalating tensions between Washington and Moscow.
In April 2022, Ukraine claimed to have sank a Russian Black Sea Fleet ship with missiles.
The zone is also used to export Ukrainian grain, a key supply to countries in Africa and Asia, thanks to a United NationsTurkeysponsored deal that was extended by two months last week.
