Russia multiplies the violent demonstrations. After another night of strikes against the port of Odessa, Moscow will start joint military exercises with China in the Sea of Japan on Thursday, July 20. These maneuvers must last four days until Sunday. “The main goal is to strengthen naval cooperation between Russia and China to maintain stability and peace in the Asia-Pacific region,” Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Five Chinese warships, including the guided missile destroyer Qiqihar, maneuver alongside anti-submarine ships and Russian corvettes. Joint artillery fire is also planned.
A collaboration that should be strengthened
This is the sixth military patrol Beijing and Moscow are conducting in the sea area in four years. The two powers have also trained in the air: Their last joint exercise even prompted South Korea to use combat aircraft preventively.
Naval cooperation between the two countries is also to be strengthened, according to announcements by the Chinese defense minister in July. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, Beijing has not condemned Moscow’s actions. Furthermore, China shares the Kremlin’s desire to counter what the two powers see as American hegemony.
