Russia announces successful test of ‘modern’ ICBM; Watch the video

Russia has announced it has “successfully” tested an “advanced” ICBM, just weeks after suspending participation in a nuclear arms control treaty with the United States.

The Defense Ministry said in a statement that a “combat team successfully fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from a landmobile missile system at the Kapustin Yar base.”

“The test missile’s warhead accurately hit a simulated target at the Sary Shagan training ground (in the Republic of Kazakhstan),” it adds.

Russia successfully tests a new model of an ICBM

Since the offensive in Ukraine began last year, President Vladimir Putin has threatened to use nuclear weapons if he sees Russia in danger.

At the end of February, the Russian head of state announced the suspension of the country’s participation in the New START nuclear disarmament treaty signed with the United States.

Less than three weeks ago, Putin said he would install tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, an allied country that would bring the weapons to the Ukrainian border and very close to the European Union.

Both decisions were criticized by NATO.

Although the Russian ministry did not specify what type of missile was used in Tuesday’s test, the ministry noted that the purpose of the exercise “was to test advanced antiballistic ICBM materials.”

“The launch confirmed the accuracy of the circuit design and engineering solutions used in the development of new strategic missile systems,” he added.

In February, Putin said the country would introduce a new type of ICBM this year after intelligence agencies from the United States reported a failed test of the weapon.

Dubbed “Satan 2” by Western analysts, the new Sarmat projectile can carry multiple nuclear warheads and is part of the new generation of Russian missiles that Putin has already described as “invincible”.
