The Russian Election Commission vetoed this Saturday (23) the candidacy for the presidential election of the journalist and former city councilor Yekaterina Duntsova, a democracy activist who defends the end of the offensive in Ukraine.
Commission alleged “errors in documentation” According to the Russian press, the candidacy was submitted for registration.
This was stated by the chairwoman of the commission, Ella Pamfilova The panel unanimously decided to block Duntsova's candidacy for the elections in March 2024.
“You are a young woman and you have your life ahead of you,” the President of the Electoral Commission told the 40yearold candidate.
Duntsova criticized the decision, which she described as “sad”.
On Telegram she announced her intention to appeal to the Supreme Court of Russia.
In practice, however, the process has little chance of success, as any candidacy that represents direct opposition to Kremlin policies has no chance of being approved.
Duntsova also called on leaders of the small liberal Yabloko party to support her candidacy.
“We cannot sit idly by. This is the last legal opportunity for citizens to express their dissatisfaction with the policies of the current authorities,” he said on Telegram. “Russians must vote.”
This was reported by the chairwoman of the commission, Ella Pamfilova 29 people submitted documents for registering candidacies for the presidency.
The victory of President Vladimir Putin, who has been in power since 1999, is considered certain and he is expected to receive a new sixyear term.
There is hardly any resistance in Russia, after years of oppression. Since the offensive in Ukraine began in February 2022, this policy has become even more severe.
