Russia cuts power supply to Lithuania

Electricity was suspended due to the country’s “inability” to make payments in rubles, agency Sputnik edit says

sputnik Russia has stopped supplying electricity to Lithuania, grid operator Litgrid announced on Sunday.

Exports to the Baltic country were halted due to the country’s “inability” to make payments in rubles.

Electricity company Inter RAO, Russia’s only importer of electricity to Lithuania, confirmed the suspension of supplies. Earlier this month, Inter RAO’s Nordic branch also stopped supplying electricity to Finland.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Energy initially announced that it would stop buying Russian electricity on Friday.

After stopping Russian supplies, Lithuania intends to meet power needs through local power plants and imports from other European countries, notably Sweden, Poland and Latvia, Litgrid CEO Rokas Masiulis said.

According to the company, Russian imports accounted for 16% of Lithuania’s electricity consumption.

On Saturday, Finnish gas network operator Gasgrid Finland announced that Russia had halted supplies of natural gas to Finland after stateowned energy wholesaler Gasum failed to make the mandatory ruble payment.
