Lviv’s mayor said one person was injured and a warehouse was damaged in Russia’s early morning airstrikes.

The western Ukrainian city of Lviv was rocked by explosions early this morning as air defenses struggled to stop waves of Russian airstrikes, local officials said.

The city’s mayor, Andriy Sadoviy, wrote on the messaging app Telegram early Tuesday that “air defense forces are deployed in our region” and urged residents to seek shelter.

The Ukrainian Air Force wrote on Telegram: “The threat of Shahed [Iranian-made drones] remains in the Lviv region. Air defense is deployed.”

Western Ukraine came under air strike alert from around 00:00 GMT. Several waves of drones reportedly attempted to hit targets in the city of Lviv from around 0130 GMT, with numerous explosions being heard as air defenses intercepted the incoming unmanned aerial vehicles.

Sadoviy later reported that a fire had broken out in an industrial warehouse and rescue workers were fighting the blaze. Initial reports indicate that one person was injured, he said.

“So far only one person has been injured in the attack,” the mayor said on Telegram, adding that a man in his 20s was found under the rubble of a warehouse and taken to hospital.

The extent of the attack and the full extent of the damage were not immediately known. There was no immediate comment from Russia.

The head of the military administration of the Lviv region, Maksym Kozytskyi, said that two people, a man and a woman, were rescued from the rubble of the city.

“It is initially believed that the woman has no injuries. “The man’s condition is serious,” he said, adding that the city received the all-clear about the airstrikes at 0300 GMT.

Although Lviv is far from the front lines of fighting in eastern and southern Ukraine, there have been deadly Russian missile and drone attacks targeting civilian infrastructure and residential buildings, causing significant damage and deaths among city residents.
