Russia respects the elections in Argentina and wants to promote relations

“We respectfully welcome the election of the Argentine people. “It is a very important nation in South America, we have quite good relations with it,” Peskov told reporters.

Likewise, the spokesman added that the Kremlin “awaits clarification of numerous issues of bilateral relations and is committed to further promoting our relations with Argentina.”

According to him, Moscow has taken note of certain statements made by Milei during the election campaign, but prefers “to judge by the statements he makes after the inauguration.”

The leader of the far-right party La Libertad Avanza, Javier Milei, obtained 55.69 percent of the vote in the second round of the presidential elections held this Sunday in Argentina, compared to 44.30 percent for the official candidate Sergio Massa.

Milei, whose victory marks the decline of the dominant traditional forces over the past two decades, will take office on December 10 and will remain in office until 2027.

Argentina, along with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran, is invited to join the Brics group, which currently consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, from January 1, 2024.

During the election campaign, Milei hesitated to allow Argentina to join the Brics states, saying he would not “promote deals with the communists because they do not respect the basic parameters of free trade, freedom and democracy.”

In his speech on Sunday, Milei did not name any measures to be taken after the government takes office, but MP Diana Mondino, who will be chancellor in the future government, said Argentina would not accept the Brics group’s invitation.
