Russia, Udalstov in handcuffs: He is the leader of the “Left Front”

More trouble for anti-Putin politicians in Russia. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the left-wing Left Front party, was arrested and a criminal case was opened against him for “justifying terrorism.” Udaltsov's apartment was searched, his lawyer Violetta Volkova said: “Electronic media was confiscated.” A criminal case was opened against him under Article 205.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (justification of terrorism). He was brought to the investigative committee for questioning. Udaltsov faces up to seven years in prison if convicted of justifying terrorism.

It is not the first time that the man, a 46-year-old politician, has had problems with the law in Russia. The Moscow Times recalls that in 2012, Udaltsov took part in anti-Kremlin demonstrations on the eve of the inauguration of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2014, the Moscow City Court found Udaltsov guilty of organizing mass riots and he was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison. In August 2017, Udaltsov, who pleaded not guilty, was released. And now there is even more trouble for those who dare to oppose the “tsar”.
