Russian attacks on Kherson, Kharkiv leave at least four dead

Rescue teams search the rubble of the Kharkiv building to the northeast as Russian shelling hits the southern city of Kherson.

At least one person was killed in an airstrike on Kharkiv in north-eastern Ukraine, while three people died in renewed Russian shelling in the southern city of Kherson.

“Today the Russian army shelled Kherson terribly all day,” said Zelenskyy in his video address on Sunday evening.

“Two women, nurses, were injured in hospital. So far there are reports of six wounded and three dead.”

Things have calmed down significantly on the front in southern Ukraine since Moscow left the city of Kherson in November last year.

The region is one of four in the south and east that Russia reportedly annexed in the past year, though it did not fully control the areas, and the region’s capital still faces frequent shelling.

A rocket also hit a block of flats in Kharkiv, killing a woman, injuring at least three others and causing widespread damage, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said.

Crime scene images showed a fire engulfing part of an apartment building in the country’s second largest city.

Syniehubov said on Sunday the attack took place in the city’s central Kiev district.

“Three people were slightly injured. Unfortunately, an elderly woman was killed,” Syniehubov wrote on Telegram. “Her husband was nearby when the strike took place and miraculously he was not seriously injured.”

Syniehubov told media outlet Suspilne that rescue teams were searching for another missing elderly woman who they feared was trapped under the rubble.

“The fourth floor was destroyed. It’s an old building,” he was quoted as saying. “We are aware that the second and third floors were badly damaged. The entire part of the building is no longer habitable.”
