The brutality of the Russo-Ukrainian war also spread to Germany. In Saxony, there was an outbreak of violence between motorists.
On Saturday, the small-scale war in Ukraine broke out at a red traffic light in the town of Bautzen in East Saxony. An elderly Russian man (69) suddenly got out of his car at the intersection, rummaged around in the trunk for a moment and then, armed with a tire iron, suddenly broke into the car of Ukrainian pastor Sergey Kosyak (46).
There was a fight between the two men, who fortunately could be separated by passers-by and the Russian’s passenger. The cleric’s camera footage shows a larger man pushing the 69-year-old, who is still threatening with the steel tool, back to his car and then running towards him through the driver’s door. Other witnesses arrive and prevent him from leaving again.
Was the flag the trigger?
The incident had a happy ending. According to police, no one was injured. “It is now necessary to determine the motives of the attack,” the report says. The criminal police have started investigations into attempts at dangerous bodily harm and threats and are now looking for witnesses.
“He insulted me in Russian,” the pastor who was attacked told TAG24. The 46-year-old regularly travels between Saxony and his hometown of Donetsk, where he previously cared for several free evangelical congregations for 17 years to bring Ukrainian refugees to safety before the war escalated. He openly shows his commitment to the blue and yellow national flag on the car. Perhaps it was she who aroused the Russian’s ire.
The incident had a profound emotional impact on Kosyak: “I brought a lot of people to Germany so that they would be safe here. Now something like this is happening here too, we don’t feel safe,” he says.
