Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov assured on Thursday (March 3rd) that Western leaders are considering the possibility of a nuclear war in the context of the conflict with Russia. “Everyone knows that World War III can only be nuclear, but I draw attention to the fact that it is in the minds of Western politicians, not those of the Russians,” the Russian foreign minister told a news conference.

He cited in particular the recent statements by his French and British counterparts Jean-Yves Le Drian and Elizabeth Truss on nuclear deterrence and the risk of war with Russia. “If some people are working out a real war plan against us, and I think they are working out it, they need to think carefully,” he said, assuring us that “we will not allow anyone to destabilize us.”

Vladimir Putin announced on Sunday that he was putting the Russian military’s nuclear deterrent forces on alert, a decision that sparked waves around the world, with many capitals protesting against the new escalation following the Ukrainian invasion.

When he announced Russian military intervention in Ukraine a week ago, the Russian president also posed a meaningful threat. “Anyone who tries to stop us, let alone threaten our country, our people, must know that Russia’s response will be immediate and will have consequences you have never experienced in your history.” he says.
