Moscow, 01.08. (RHC) The Russian government welcomes the resumption of diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Colombia, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman María Zajárova said on Monday.

“We welcome the meeting between Venezuelan Foreign Minister Carlos Faría and his counterpart-designate from Colombia, Álvaro Leyva, during which a joint statement was released on the resumption of diplomatic and consular relations between the two countries,” the official said.

In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zajárova stated that this decision is fully in the interests of the Venezuelan and Colombian people.

He also highlighted this as an important step in restoring dialogue between the two states, which was cut short “by the West’s failure to recognize the legitimate Venezuelan government.”

“Moscow hopes that Caracas and Bogotá will solve the accumulated problems in the areas of migration, security in border areas and trade and economic cooperation in a civilized and peaceful way,” the diplomat said.

Venezuela severed diplomatic ties with Colombia – a country with which it shares a roughly 2,200-kilometer border – in 2019 after an attempt by the opposition led by Juan Guaidó to enter an alleged humanitarian aid facility across the border, which Caracas described as an invasion attempt .

Following Gustavo Petro’s victory in Colombia’s recent presidential elections in June, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has expressed hope that relations will be restored soon. (font: Latin Press).
