Russian tennis player Vera Zvonareva has been denied entry to Poland where she was due to play in a WTA tournament, Poland’s Interior Ministry said on Saturday.
“On July 21, Polish border guards barred the Russian tennis player from entering Poland,” the ministry said in a statement.
“Vera Zvonareva tried to enter our country on a visa issued by France via a flight from Belgrade,” the text reads.
Polish authorities said that the player, who was scheduled to take part in the Warsaw tournament, which was included in the WTA world calendar and opened on Monday, was stranded in the transit area of Warsaw Airport before boarding a 12:00 p.m. (10:00 a.m. GMT) flight to Podgorica.
According to the Polish ministry, the 38-year-old is on the list of “undesirable” people in Poland.
“Poland steadfastly opposes the regimes of (Russian and Belarusian Presidents Vladimir) Putin and (Alexander) Lukashenko and does not allow people who support Russian and Belarusian operations to enter our country,” the Polish statement concluded.
