Russian troops occupying the Ukrainian city of Kherson opened fire on peaceful protesters, authorities in Kyiv said on Monday.
“Russian security forces ran up, started throwing stun grenades into the crowd and started shooting,” the press service of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said in a statement.
Alleged footage from the scene shows protesters running amid the sound of automatic gunfire. Small explosions – possibly concussion grenades – can be seen around the dozens of protesters.

In Kherson, Russian war criminals opened fire on unarmed people peacefully protesting invaders. You can see a wounded pensioner. This is the ugly face of Russia, a shame for humanity. We must stop Russia! Sanction them, isolate them, hold war criminals accountable. pic.twitter.com/WeItSykD3q

“This is the ugly face of Russia, a shame for humanity,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dymtro Kuleba tweeted over video from the scene.

Kherson, a southern city north of the Crimean peninsula, was the first major city to be captured by Russian forces since the Kremlin’s invasion began last month. Peaceful protests against the occupation authorities have been the order of the day in recent weeks.
