Since Kherson’s release, authorities have repeatedly encountered suspicious Russian torture sites. Now, a particularly explosive discovery has been made.
Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly accused Russia of systematically detaining and torturing civilians in the formerly occupied city of Kherson in the south of the country, “Heute” reported. New allegations paint an even bleaker picture of the period of occupation in the now liberated Kherson.
According to Dmytro Lubinets, Human Rights Commissioner of the Ukrainian Parliament, ten more torture chambers were found in the region. “In one of the torture chambers, we found a separate room, a cell where children were kept (…) Even the occupants called it that, a children’s cell,” Lubinez told reporters.
Authorities have documentation of what happened at the alleged torture sites. According to her, the children only received water every other day and practically nothing to eat. There was intense psychological pressure on the children: “They said their parents had left them and weren’t coming back.”
12,000 kidnapped children
Furthermore, the war separated many children from their families. According to the report, around 12,000 Ukrainian children have been abducted to Russia since February, with 8,600 of them being violent. Authorities also report mass deportations of Ukrainians. According to estimates by the US ambassador to the United Nations, between 900,000 and 1.6 million people had already been deported in September.
